Siemens TIA-1200/1500 PLCs

A five-day course with the option to complete a two days QQI Accreditation.

This course is designed to focus on the fundamentals of Siemens Simatic S7-1500 PLC + HMI's, specifically covering S7 TIA programming in Ladder

(LAD), Flow Block Diagram (FBD) and Statement List (STL).

The course will also cover Siemens Simatic S7-1200 PLC which leads to Siemens Simatic S7-1500 PLC.

Course Prerequisite:

No prior use or knowledge of Siemens PLC Systems is necessary, but one assumes that students can operate a keyboard and have PC computer skills.

Unique to First Polymer Training Skillnet, this customised course been designed as step 3 within our Automation Career Progression Pathway.

The cost above includes the accreditation and attendance fee for Day 6 & 7. No discount or refund will be given to participants that do not attend/ complete the 2 further accreditation days. In order to avail of accreditation on this programme, trainees must attend the examination days which are generally held 4-8 weeks after the main programme. This is a QQI requirement of our validated programme, in order for candidates to successfully achieve a Level 6 Component Award in Programmable Logic Controllers (6N537O). The gap from the main course to the assessment day is intended to allow trainees time to implement what they have learned while on the job/ and also have an opportunity to embed the knowledge and reflect on the skills and knowledge gained. Candidates who do not wish to avail of accreditation are still welcome to only attend the scheduled 5 days and receive a Certificate of Attendance.

    • Central Processing Units.
    • Digital Input / Output Modules.

  • Chapter 2: TIA S7-1500 PLC Hardware
    • Communications Processors (CP)
    • Profinet Remote IO using IM556
    • Profibus Remote IO ET200S
    • Ethernet Modules.
    • Exercises
  • Chapter 3: Creating and Handling Projects.
    • Creating / Setting up the TIA-1500 Training Kit project.
    • Backup, Transfer, Compare, Delete & Copy Blocks to & from the CPU.
    • Edit "Load" Settings

  • Chapter 4: Siemens TIA-PLC Software
    • TIA Functionality Online / Offline. What is the difference.
    • Program Structure Calls
    • Storing Programs on RAM / MEDIA Cards
    • Interfacing to CPU using Profinet, TCP/IP.

Day 2

  • Chapter 5: Fundamentals of TIA PLC Software
    • Methods of Representation i.e. Ladder Logic (LAD), Flow Block Diagram (FBD) & Statemer
    • Overview of OBs, FBs FCs, SFBs, SFC's & DBs.
    • Fundamental Ladder Logic Instruction Set "AND" & "OR" etc.
    • Contacts Normally "OPEN" & "CLOSED".
    • Exercises Convert STL Code into LAD or FBD
  • Chapter 5: Binary & Logic Operations
    • Create a user program in LAD, FBD & STL,
    • "AND" Logic Function.
    • "OR" Logic Function,
    • Exercises; Create a Start Stop / Hold On Circuit.
  • Chapter 5: Binary & Logic Operations Cont,
    • "AND" Before "OR".
    • "OR" Before "AND".
    • Online status, using LAD, FBD, STL.
    • Introduction to Statement List. Explain the rules used.
    • Exercises; Setup a Toggle Switch.
  • Chapter 5: RS Flip Flops / Comparators
    • RS Flip Flops
    • SR Flip Flops
    • Explain the difference between RS & SR
    • Comparators
    • Setup a Toggle Switch using RS or SR Flips

Day 3

  • Chapter 6: Timers,
    • TIA Timers using Single & Multi Instance (With Instance DB's).
    • Legacy Timers using Pulse, On-Delay and Off-Delay Timers.
    • Explain the Timing diagrams. Always causes confusion.
    • Exercises, Setup a Pulse Generator using Two Timers
  • Chapter 6: Timers Cont,
    • Exercises Setup a Pulse Generator using No Timer's using Time Driven Interupts.
    • This introduces one to Interupt Driven OB's
  • Chapter 7: Counters
    • Count Up Counter
    • Count Down Counters
    • Exercises
  • Chapter 8: Numbering Systems
    • What are "BITS" "BYTES" "WORD" and "REAL VALUES"
    • Binary, Hexidecimal, Decimal ASCII and BCD.
    • Edit the Force Variable
    • Processing and Storing numbers in the PLC
    • Load / Transfer Functions into Accumulators
    • Use Maths Functions ADD, SUB, DIV, MUL.
    • Exercise. Set up a Watch Table and demo the Structure of Bytes's, Words, Double Words and Reals

  • Chapter 10: Monitor & Force Varlables
    • Create Watch Tables (WTs) Tables.
    • Save WT Tables.
    • Monitor / Modify Watch Tables
    • Exercises, Setup WTs for Digital & Analgue Inputs / Outputs.
    • WT for Pulse Generator.
  • Chapter 10: Monitor & Force Varlables Cont
    • Force Outputs.
    • Force Inputs, Explain the consequences. Demonstrate the LED Force.

  • Chapter 12 Analogues
    • Setup Analogue Read/Write Blocks.
    • Setup & simulate AI by 2 Chanels.

    • Add in Alarm & watchdog Monitoring on the State / Transition functions.
    • Demo a Sequence Running,
    • Exercises Setup a Drilll Set Sequencer.

    • Stop/Run/Faulted Mode

Trainer Profile

Desmond Foley is the founder and MD of Focus Engineering. Des has worked in many industries including Pharmaceutical, Power Generation, Oil and Gas, Food and Beverage and Medical Supplies. He has worked in the Automation Industry for more than 30 years. He has been responsible for activities ranging from design, program development, testing and commissioning of PLC control systems, to the management of automation projects as a Senior Projects/Automation Engineer. Des has a BSc in Engineering, Dip in EE and Dip in HR.
